Personal Fireworks- Stay Safe & Know the Legal Restrictions

In the Lakes Region, fireworks displays are offered throughout the summer at a number of venues. These are performed by licensed professionals and are supervised by the local fire department. As a result, the risk of injury is relatively low.

The same cannot be said about private fireworks displays. Fireworks contributed to approximately 10,500 emergency room visits in the United States during 2014, according to a report by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission. There were also eleven deaths, four of which occurred due to house fires caused by fireworks. Because of this risk, some cities and towns do not permit the use of private fireworks. Go to http://1.usa.gov/1TWC75Z for a list or contact your local fire department to inquire about your area.

In New Hampshire, you must be 21 years or older to purchase and use Permissible Fireworks (those that are legal for sale, possession and use and can be purchased in licensed retail stores). These may be used on your private property or that belonging to someone else who provides written permission. For safety tips and a list of permissible and not permissible fireworks, go to http://1.usa.gov/1UidRxz.

For the purpose of safety and reduced liability, we offer the following tips:

  • Have a hose or fire extinguisher readily available.
  • Ignite fireworks on a flat, level surface, clear of all debris and away from flammable objects and materials.
  • Have a phone ready in the event of an accidental fire or injury and call 911 immediately.
  • Wear eye protection when igniting fireworks.
  • Read and follow all safety directions provided on or with firework devices.
  • Light only one at a time and move away quickly.
  • Keep spectators at a safe distance.

Bear in mind that you could be held liable for injuries and damages to spectators, their personal belongings as well as your neighbors’ land, home and possessions. Taking these precautions will lessen your risk of liability.
