Don’t Risk Your Compensation- Follow Doctor’s Orders

If you have been injured and are making a claim for your losses, it is critical that you faithfully follow your doctor’s orders. Whether the injury occurred on the job, in an auto accident, or from a slip and fall, following your doctor’s orders is not only essential for your medical recovery, but crucial to your financial recovery as well.

When making a claim for personal injury, the insurance adjuster assigned to your case will evaluate both liability and damages. She will scrutinize your medical records looking for a number of details including, but not limited to:

  • who you treated with
  • how soon you sought medical care
  • how frequently you were treated
  • injuries documented in the medical file
  • any missed appointments
  • how well you followed doctor’s orders regarding work leave and other prescribed limitations

Insurance companies want to pay you as little as possible; do not give them a reason to sell you short. If you fail to follow your doctor’s orders, the insurance adjuster may assert that your injuries are not as severe as you claim, or that you aren’t doing your part to quickly recover.

Finding a doctor you trust and following that doctor’s orders is imperative for success in your physical and financial recovery. It is also recommended that you maintain a daily journal that details your pain level, limitations, medication usage, state of mind and difficulties with sleep, work or other daily activities. This documentation may prove helpful in recalling details at a later date.

While you focus on recovering from your injuries by pursuing the best and most effective medical treatment, your attorney can work on building the strongest case possible in order to secure you the compensation you deserve.
