Snow Clean-up – Remember Employee Areas

Here in New England, a great amount of physical and financial resources are extended after snowstorms. While most businesses are concerned about the safety of public walkways and parking areas used by customers and clients, some may be remiss to apply the same effort to areas designated for employee use.

If employees are mandated to park in designated areas, those areas, and access to them, need to be properly maintained as well. These areas must also be kept clear of snow and ice for the safety of staff. When it comes to personal injury claims, it makes no difference that the business owner didn’t cause or even know of the dangerous conditions, they can still be held liable for employees’ injuries resulting from hazardous situations.

Employers should know to shovel, salt, and sand walkways, stairs and sidewalks after a snow storm or even rain which has been followed by freezing temperatures. In the event they are unable to do so themselves, it is their responsibility to assure that the matter is assigned and carried out by a designated party. Ultimately, it is the business owner who will bear the burden of liability if such tasks are not performed in a reasonable manner to provide safety for his or her employees.

Employee parking lots, stairways, and entrances should be also be well lit and maintained to be free of damages that could cause falls. Prevention is better, and often much cheaper, than reaction.
