Preparing for a Coronavirus Surge

With the CDC predicting a surge in coronavirus transmissions this winter, now is the perfect time to make sure you are prepared. In addition to purchasing important household items that may become scarce, there are also some legal action items to consider:

  • Estate planning– This isn’t just for the elderly or those with great wealth. In the unfortunate event you contract the virus, your estate plan appoints agents to handle your finances and health care decisions if you are not able to do so, as well as including your wishes for distribution of your assets should you pass away. Without the proper documents, state law and the court system will make these decisions instead. This can be costly and stressful for your loved ones. An Estate Plan ensures your wishes will be honored.
  • Financial review/cleanup– Plan for your local economy or job being further affected, by reviewing your budget, creating a plan to pay down debt, and performing a credit check to look for potential fraud and get tips on improving your credit. You should also consider engaging an attorney to help you solidify legal obligations, such as updating Lease Agreements and preparing payment contracts for individuals who owe you a debt.
  • Annulment of criminal record– Many individuals were furloughed, or lost their jobs completely due to the impact of Covid-19. In the event you become unemployed or would like to switch jobs, an arrest or conviction on your record may prevent you from obtaining new employment. An attorney can help you petition the court for annulment of your criminal record thus eliminating this barrier

The attorneys at Wescott Law hope your family will avoid any of these situations, however, you’ll sleep better knowing you’re prepared for any worse case scenarios. Give us a call to set up your appointment.
